First month favorites - baby products

 photo 95814199-7a92-44a1-be0e-3ba54ce31ff0_zpsfe784c9c.jpg

I just thought I'd throw together a quick post with some of my favorite baby items from the first month!!

1. Itzbeen pocket nanny -  After the first two weeks of writing every waking moment down (feedings, diaper changes, naps, etc.) I was so happy to switch to this little timer.  It has four different timers on it (feedings, diaper changes, naps, and an extra - which I use for her zantac) as well as slide bar at the bottom which lets you know which side of your chest they started on during the last feeding.  You simply push the button to restart the timer each time you complete the "task."  It completely takes those panic moments of "have I not fed her in 5 hours..." "wait, did i change her diaper 2 hours ago or was it longer than that" and eliminates the need to really clock watch.  I even take it with me when we go places...its tiny so it fits easily in the side pockets of my diaper bag.  I used this with Addie and was so excited to pull it back out for Kate.

2. Aden and Anais swaddle blankets - These are my "go-to blankets"...especially given that Kate is a summer baby.  These lightweight blankets are perfect for covering her up when we are out and about or just a small blanket to lay over her legs while she is in her swing.  I've also found it really handy as a burp cloth or a nursing cover when I'm in a bind.  While they are labeled swaddle blankets...I can't attest to how well they do in that arena as we are tied to the swaddle blankets that have the velcro closures on them...but these little blankets are a "must have".  They also fold up very compactly so they are perfect for keeping in your diaper bag too!

3. Fisher Price Rock 'N Play Sleeper - This has been a lifesaver for us...and I often wonder how we survived Addie's first months without it!!  Kate loves to sleep on me or the hubs (which is fine except when laundry begins to pile up around me) but we can usually get her to take a decent nap here as well.  It folds up very easily and the insert is really easy to wash...I also LOVE that it isn't a huge consumer of space in my home.

4. Hooter Hider - I'd say this is pretty much a must for breastfeeding mommas...I have two - one in the diaper bag for when we are out and about and another next to our coffee table...for those moments where you are in the middle of nursing and someone decides to drop by.  They totally give me the privacy I need amidst a nosy toddler or a crowd and I feel completely covered!

Show & Tell...oohhh, baby!!

I'm linking up for another wonderful week with Becky over at "From Mrs. to Mama" for Show & Tell Monday...and this week we are talking all things baby...yay!!  So...I'll list the questions and share my responses....and if you haven't already - head on over and link-up and share in the fun!!

1.  Tell us your favorite baby names.

Girls:
Olivia
Avery
Clara
Sloane
Cora

Boys:
Landon
Jack
Cam
Carter
Peyton

Side Note:  Don't expect any of these to make the final list when it comes to the hubs and I choosing a name in the future - we couldn't be more different in what we like...so it will take quite a bit of convincing for any of these to make the cut...

2.  Show me your dream nursery.

Girls:

Boys:

3.  How many children would you like to have?  How far apart?

uumm...how to answer this?!  ok, so if you'd asked me before we actually had Addie I would have told you the number was 3...no exceptions, no questions asked.  Now...I really don't know - the hubs and I have agreed to take it one at a time and know that we'll know when were done.  No, not like Duggar style or anything like that...I'm not sure we'll even make it to 3.

4.  Tell us what you think the importance of parenting is.

Not to sound cliche...but parenting is giving your child roots...so deep that they know right from wrong, have a desire to leave this world a little better than they found it, treat others with respect and compassion, and always say "i love you."  And then giving them wings...so strong that they can build their own lives on the foundation of everything you taught them.

5.  Show us your favorite newborn photo.

Seriously...next time I'm totally doing this...I die at the cuteness of this pic:

6.  Tell us some things you promise never to do as a parent (and if you are a parent, did you stick to it).

No video games...none.  Will they play them at their friends houses?  Yep.  Will they beg me and grovel at my feet?  I'm sure.  Will I give in? No.  I won't get on my soap box about what I think video games have done to society...I could write a whole post on that...and they are here to stay... but not in my house.

Cloth Diapers - 21 months in review

Photobucket
*I have not been paid on incentivized in any way by any of the products listed below - these opinions are my own**

I posted a while back here about our decision to use cloth diapering and how it works in our house.  I am happy to report that we are 21 months in and still using cloth diapers.  We've  had a few changes and I wanted to share some of our "work-arounds" for what I believe are pretty common issues you might face the longer you go with a cloth diapering system...

Smell - It happens...you forget to wash them on that second day, they accidentally get left in a diaper bag...whatever the case may be...the strong smell of amonia starts and you can't seem to get rid of it.  It happened to us so I looked for a product that could help resolve this and am happy to share that Rockin' Green's Funk Rock Amonia Bouncer does just the trick.  You can buy it on Amazon and I'm sure a host of other places and one overnight soak...or even 30 minute soak on a front loader and the amonia smell is GONE.  Like it stays gone...until you miss another cycle.  I've used it time and time again and am in love!!  I'm still using Vaska, which I blogged about here, for the routine washings and am still thrilled with the results I'm getting (as info - Target is no longer carrying Vaska but I am able to get it through Alice - which is pretty cool online store for a bunch of things other than just Vaska).

Stains - Nothing works better than some sunshine to get those stains out.  I am happy to report that while Addie's diapers may not be as bright as they were when we first brought them home, they really don't have any major stains.  I try to hang them on the line when I can but haven't been able to do it much lately (more like once a month) but it still does an awesome job of getting rid of the stains.

Leaks - At about 14 months, we started to notice that most nights she was leaking through her cloth diap - we purchased some liners and they definitely helped but added alot of bulk to her diaper.  We decided it would be better at night to switch her to a disposable and that has definitely resolved the problem.  We are also using the disposables during her naptime at school because of the same problem. The liners definitely resolve this problem but we just decided it made the diaper a little too big for our girl to be comfortable.

Durability - We've had zero problems with her diapers holding up....all of the snaps are still in place and the cloth looks great (a few areas look a little worn on the liner but thats it).  The outside of the diaper still looks brand new and Addie still seems perfectly comfortable in them!  I totally expect us to be able to use these again for future babies.  As I blogged about in my first cloth diaper post...we chose the BumGenius Elementals and I would totally recommend these to any one in the market for a good all-in-one cloth diaper.

Using them in Day Care - Since I wrote my last post, Addie has started going full-time to pre-school/daycare.  When looking for the right school, some of the places would not accept cloth diapers...which was a total negative in my book....but lucky for us - our first choice of schools was actually totally cool with the idea of cloth diapers.  All they asked us to provide was a separate diaper pail (I picked up this one off Amazon) and disposable plastic liners for the diaper pail and each used diaper (I buy the cheap 4 gallon trash bags from just about anywhere).  They still follow the same standards when changing her and we just bring home the used diapers every day from school.  It's really been a breeze and they've been totally accommodating!!

Whew...ok, so that was alot of information.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions at all....seriously y'all...cloth diapering is not that much extra work.  It takes about as much time as it would for me to run out to the store and buy disposables on the regular!!

Also, please feel free to comment below on any successes or failures you've experienced with cloth diapers!!

Happy Monday....

It's potty time...

We pulled the trigger on purchasing Addie's training potty and so far its been all good.  We are obviously taking things very slowly...I've heard from almost everyone I've ever talked to that pushing it only makes things worse...plus Addie is pretty young to be seriously potty training.  We've talked about it and she likes to sit fully clothed on hers while I'm on mine...all great steps in my opinion.  She also takes great joy in carrying it around the house....as you can see below:)

I'd love to hear from you guys on any tips you have or tricks that worked well in your house in the potty training department.

One and done?

Photobucket

We're not....but same days I think we could be.  I struggle with this concept on an almost daily basis....I feel like things are perfect right now...Addie is happy and healthy....the budget is balanced...our house is the perfect size...we have our schedules down....life is good.  I know having all of those things make us incredibly lucky...my pregnancy with Addie was perfect other than some annoying spotting that went on during my entire pregnancy....are we tempting fate with baby #2...upsetting the apple cart?!

Who knows...right?!  God has a plan for all of us and I certainly can't say as I sit here today what mine is but there is one thing that constantly nags at me....Addie needs a sibling (at least one - not knocking only children here either)....I have a brother and I'm so thankful for that.  Someone to confide in...laugh with...cry with...share holidays with...make fun of your parents with.  And...I want her to be close in age to her sibling...I always wish I was closer in age to my brother...I also wish I had another sibling (not a knock to my parents either)....so is my desire to have 3 children just a reflection of what I wanted as a child....confused at my train of thought yet, i am?!

I also worry...alot....worry about my ability to care for another child and still give Addie everything I have...worry about surviving those first 6 weeks...or really 6 months....worry about Addie not understanding that she's not the only one in the house...worry about our house being too small and needing to upsize (moving is not my thing)....worry about everything and nothing.

As you can imagine this subject comes up alot in my house....and I know me...the worrying...the going back and forth between whether or not to take that leap of faith...I was the SAME way before I got pregnant with Addie...I didn't know if it was the right time.  Even after getting the positive result on the pee stick...I felt an overwhelming sense of..."are you really ready?"  And I was...and about 4 months into my pregnancy I was wishing we already had a baby.  So I know...this is me....my way of not rushing into what one should consider "one of the biggest decisions of their life"...because I'm spontaneous and impulsive...and I want 3 kids...maybe.

Modest Mondays

Photobucket
source
Anyone else feel like their wee one is constantly growing out of clothes you've just bought?!  There are so many things that Addie only wore once or sadly never even got to wear at all...just sitting in her closet with the tags still on.  I LOVE clothes...and shopping...which means I'm often tempted to buy lots and lots for Addie.  I'm constantly reminding myself of what she needs and what I need to pass on!  That being said, I do try to keep my impulse shopping to a minimum to keep those $$$s in check.  So, here are a few things I've found that seem to keep things a bit more reasonable:

1. Shop CLEARANCE - Well, duh?!  But, I never leave Target or any of my other favorite stores without at least perusing the sale racks to see if I can find something for a deal.  I am ALWAYS looking at least 2 sizes ahead and I just keep a drawer in Addie's room where I stow away all of her bigger stuff.

2.  eBay - I've found some wonderful deals on smocked, specialty items, and even "lot" purchases of Carters sleepers on eBay over the last year or so.  Its very easy to get caught up in bidding wars so my approach is simple - I bid the max amount I'm willing to pay and I don't check back until the auction is over.  Kids grow so fast but I'm always impressed with the condition of these clothes!  Also, as a side note - always check what the seller is charging for shipping - sometimes the price looks awesome until you realize the seller is charging you a hefty fee for shipping.

3. Consignment stores - I've done a bit of consignment sale shopping in my day and am pretty picky about the ones I will actually visit.  There is actually only one in my area that I will buy from for Addie because the others are cluttered and make me claustrophobic.  But, I've found some AMAZING deals at this little consignment shop and highly recommend checking any out that are in your area.

4. Zulily and other deal sites - If you're looking for smocking or other specialty clothing deals (generally at least 50% off), you should check Zulily on the regular.  And, if you use Ebates (which is awesome because you earn cash back on all of your online shopping and its FREE) you can earn 3.5% cash back on your Zulily purchase, which makes it even cheaper (or at least almost covers shipping:))  My only issue with Zulily is sssllllooowww shipping times...be prepared to wait 2 weeks or more to get your items.

5.  BJs, Sams, Costco - I find the best deals on Carters, which is my choice for Addie's play clothes and sleepers, at these warehouse clubs.  I can almost always count on getting these items for $3-4 cheaper than the best deal on the Carters website or in their stores (unless of course its on the clearance rack).  The standard price for sleepers and clothing sets is generally in the $6.99 - $7.99 range which I think is a great deal on this stuff and its the same items they are selling in their stores - its not even last season's stuff!

And here are a few others that I've never actually used but have heard wonderful things about:

6. Facebook - I'm actually not on Facebook...it's the only social media outlet I have not yet indulged in but there are some awesome deals on monogrammed items on the Monogram {Re}play page and I know lots of boutiques and specialty clothing stores will run facebook auctions to sell clothes quickly and for super cheap!

7. ThredUP - This is actually an online community where you sell and buy kids clothing in bulk.  You post a box of clothes (10 or more items) and when another mom in the community purchases it, you receive $10 and the buyer pays for shipping.  When you purchase a box, you pay $10.95 for shipping and $9 for the box.  So, basically if you're selling as many boxes as you're buying, you are only paying for shipping to receive a box of clothes.  For me, I haven't joined as I am holding on to the large majority of Addie's stuff in anticipation of more children down the road but this would be awesome if you aren't planning to hold on to your kiddos clothes.

And don't forget the blog sales;)

I'd love to hear of anything else you guys are doing to save money in this department..feel free to share in the comments below!!!

Good to the last drop...

PhotobucketIt's been two months and I don't know why I've been putting off this post but I have....and now that Addie is almost turning one I'm realizing writing it is now or never...so here it is...and as a warning - it is about BREASTFEEDING...so stop now if thats TMI...don't say I didn't warn you!!

If you read my post here all about our breastfeeding journey several months ago you might remember that I mentioned that Addie was from time to time receiving some formula to supplement what my body wasn't making.  Emotions ran high around our house at first but gradually I accepted it and over the course of a few months I realized that Addie was getting more and more of it.  I'm not a formula hater...I wanted to breastfeed for as long as I could and was secretly hoping that we could make it to a year.  What I didn't realize was how quickly these kids grow (yep, I had no idea...a year ago I would have told you that Addie might be crawling by a year but certainly would not have any teeth...naive and clueless, I know!)  Anyhow...I'll put it out there...as Addie got older things started to get weird for me (its personal, i know - i don't think its weird for anyone else to breastfeed past 9 months so I'm not trying to be offensive or insensitive here).  I know its natural...I know its healthy...I get that...but when she was grabbing at my shirt and nuzzling her head in my cleavage I just started to feel like we were ready to move to just a bottle.  And then it happened...she chomped down....and thought it was funny...2 days in a row...yes, that was it - we would be nursing no more.  I planned to continue pumping for as long as I could but shortly after stopping nursing I noticed a steep decline in my supply.  Like...I pumped for 20 minutes...both sides....and only got an ounce.  I'd be lying if I didn't say there was some relief in putting away the pump and making the switch to all formula...enough to overshadow the disappointment I felt for not making it to the year mark...or 2 year mark as my Addie's pediatrician encouraged me to do (the hubs quickly nixed that idea).  We were lucky...Addie made the transition to formula with ease and my girls dried up with a quickness (not once after my marathon pump session to only get an ounce did I ever even feel full)...and I'm EXTREMELY thankful for that.  Now we're approaching the next transition to cow's milk and I'm VERY excited about that.  Like I said above...I'm not a formula hater but I couldn't drink the stuff so I'm looking forward to introducing Addie to the good stuff....whole milk..yum!!

Anyone else have a similar experience....or not??

A little ADDIEGATOR with a whole lot of ADDIETUDE...

Photobucket
our little Addiegator
Diaper changing has been a chore since Addie was about 4 months old...and not because I mind changing diapers...its the production that diaper changing has become.  At 5 months we stopped using the changing table because of her rolling around and my severe anxiety of her rolling off the table.  We used the crib until we had to lower that because she was starting to pull up and now we are on the floor in the living room most days with a changing mat.   It never fails though...any diaper change involves one of more of the following:

1.  Big crocodile tears - Loud wailing and lots of crocodile tears over the diaper change...she generally stares right at me while doing this as if to say..."momma, are you really putting me through this-can't you see you're breaking my heart?!"

2.  Flipping to her stomach - Despite me holding her legs she will flip her body over and do her best to crawl away from me - if I stop her...cue #1 above.  The worst part is that she usually does this before I have a chance to wipe her...and for the sake of my rug which just so happens to be dark brown - it's kind of a mess.  She is one feisty and determined little girl...wonder where she gets that from?!

3.  Playing with her just removed dirty diaper - uugghhh...gross.  I try to keep it as far from her reach as possible but sometimes she gets it...a tug-of-war match generally follows.

Any mommas out there have any advice for this momma on how to make this process any easier??  I have seriously almost started sweating before over a diaper change because of the amount of energy it takes some days.  My best trick has been to hand her something to keep her occuppied and work as quickly as possible but with a 3 second attention span - it just doesn't buy me much time these days!

PSA - Strap your furniture down

PhotobucketYesterday morning on my way to work I saw something that saddened my heart and compelled me to share what I learned.  Sitting at the stoplight on my way to drop Addie off I saw a minivan that had decals covering their back window reading..."In loving memory of Madison Funk" "September 2005 - October 2007" - which of course brought tears to my eyes, barely two I figured as I did the quick math.  And then the answer as to "what happened," below her name and dates read- "Strap your furniture down."  My heart sunk...clearly this family had suffered a tragedy...so, last night after work I "googled" what I'd seen on the van and was led to a website established by Madison's mommy to alert parents around the world to the dangers of furniture tipping over in your house.  Madison's story can be found here....and while I am deeply saddened by this precious angel's passing...it brought to light something I had hardly considered.  If you read Madison's story its so easy to see how it could happen...which makes it SO real.  On Madison's website they recommend the furniture straps they used after losing their daughter in this horrible tragedy...you'd never notice them if you weren't looking for them and for $4.99 for 8 brackets - how can you afford not to??  We will certainly be investing in these for our home....I'll be strapping down everything we own!!!  So...while I hate to pass along sad news - I felt strongly this was a message worth spreading.

Cloth Diapering

Photobucket**These product opinions are my own - I have not been paid or incentivized in any way to share them**

One of my first few posts...way back when...I wrote about the small steps we take in our house to try and reduce our trash output with cloth diapering being one of those things.  I'm hoping to lay out what we do and how we do it in this post but you may want to read this in sections as this is a really long post!!  Also, I've tried to link up to several other blogs that also have great cloth diapering info too!!

Making the choice:  Considering diapers are a huge source of waste that is going into our shrinking landfill capacity, cloth diapering was one way we felt we could reduce the amount of trash our home generates.  The hubs and I also have SUPER sensitive skin and were both cloth diapered as babies due to pretty severe reactions to disposables.  I know times have changed and disposables have come a long way but I still had a hard time imagining the chemicals that are used in some disposables resting against my girl's tush on a daily basis.  However, cloth diapers are not all rainbows and butterflies, and they certainly aren't free although some consumer experts estimate that you could save anywhere from $1,200 to $3,000 using cloth diapers vs. disposables.

PhotobucketAll in Ones, Pockets, or Pre Folds??:  I read a lot of websites about the pros and cons of cloth diapering and did some research on which type of cloth diaper (all in one, pockets, prefolds) would work best for us.  Based on what I found, the hubs and I selected the all in ones mainly because of their ease of use.  I wanted a brand with organic cotton and also preferred the snap closure versus velcro because I felt the snaps would hold up over the years (I am hoping to get at least 2 kids through these diapers and from what I've read that's entirely possible).  I found everything I was looking for in the Bum Genius Elementals, which are also great because they are a "grow with me" style diaper that are designed to fit children from 7 lbs to 35 lbs by simply adjusting the snaps.  We've been successfully using these for 8 months and other than the incredibly long drying time (about an hour and a half) I have 0 complaints.  I love that the cotton used in these diapers is organic and we've had no issues with diaper rash or leaking (other than when operator error is involved).  They come in all sorts of fun colors and often times eliminate my need for a diaper cover under Addie's sun dresses.  They are a tad bit bulkier than disposables but we haven't found it to create any issues when it comes to clothes fitting or hampering her ability to get around.  A few of my blog friends are a bit more adventurous than myself and have used various types and brand of cloth diapers so check out Natalie, over at From Corporate to Domestic here and Mrs Eye Can See, over at the The Juice is Worth the Squeeze here for more info on different types and brands of cloth diapers.  I also follow Rachel, over at Tales of a Monkey, a Bit, and a Bean, who's had great success with the G Diapers and has a wonderful post all about them here.

What do I need to do this?  We started with 12 cloth diapers, 48 cloth wipes, a box of Country Save detergent, a diaper pail, two Kissaluv diaper pail liners, and a diaper sprayer that attaches to the side of the toilet.  While I was home with Addie, the 12 cloth diapers worked well but after returning to work, I purchased 12 more and 24 seems to really work well for us.  We split our purchases between Cotton Babies and Diaper Junction, both online cloth diaper stores and had wonderful experiences with both!  I estimate that our total up front costs were about $650.

What worked and what didn't:

Bum Genius Elementals - LOVE these - they have worked wonderfully and I hope these will last until we are no longer diapering little bambinos.

Photobucket
just the diaper
Kissaluvs Cloth Wipes - These wipes are the perfect size and have a soft side as well as a more abrasive side for dirty butts.  These wash great and get thrown into the pail with the diapers.  We keep a small water bottle sprayer next to the diaper changing station the I use to wet the cloth wipe.  I also use the California Baby diaper spray on those "tough diapers" to help prevent any irritation.

Country Save Detergent - This is the detergent I started with and really had no complaints.  It seemed to work fairly well however, after coming across Vaska detergent one day while shopping at Target, I switched to Vaska for all of my laundering needs.  I've been happier with the Vaska and I personally prefer a liquid detergent to a powder detergent so this is what we're currently using!

Diaper Pail - not much to say here, the flip top is nice and does seem to hold the oders in well.

Kissaluvs Antibacterial Diaper Pail Liners - These are very sturdy and have held up very well despite cycling through the wash with the diapers.  I do recommend owning at least two of these so you always have a liner in the pail - even when you're washing a load.

Diaper Sprayer - This was not such a big hit in our house.  After receiving the kit, we found one of the pieces was defective, which the manufacturer quickly replaced however, this is not sturdy and could easily lead to flooding your whole bathroom if you're not careful with the water cutoff.  We actually don't ever use this either - see below in the "laundering" section for how we get all of the dirtiness out.

PhotobucketLaundering:  Whenever I tell people that we are cloth diapering this is always the topic of conversation that arises.  And personally, I expected much worse...but it really hasn't been bad.  Obviously the wet diapers are a non issue and I just throw those in the diaper pail and go on with it.  For those that are dirtied, the treatment is slightly different.  Depending on what Addie's been eating, some diapers we can simply shake off and put in the pail but others require slightly more work.  For those, I usually turn the diaper upside down so the cloth liner is facing the water in the toilet and let it soak out for about 30 minutes.  Generally speaking, after about 30 minutes I can pull the diaper out of the toilet (by grabbing the exterior liner which has not been in the toilet water) and shake gently to remove any remnants.  I then place the diaper in the pail until it comes time to do the wash.  I wash the dirty diapers every other day and have not had any problems with that schedule thus far.  To wash, I simply empty out the diaper pail liner into the washing machine, set it on "normal" and also add a "prewash" and "extra rinse" cycle.  This cycle lasts about an hour and 20 minutes and I then remove the diapers and either hang on the line for the sun to work its magic or if the weather is not cooperating I throw them in the dryer for about an hour and a half.  And when I say the sun works magic...I mean it does...it removes all of those stains on the diaper - its crazy!  After pulling the diaps off the line, they can be a bit stiff but a couple of minutes in the dryer will soften them right up!

Please, please feel free to comment on your experiences or share any favorites you have when it comes to cloth diapering - I'd love to hear about it!!  I'm hoping to be a little more adventurous when it comes to baby #2 and maybe try some of the pockets and prefolds.

Baby Product Love

PhotobucketI've seen some wonderful posts lately from some great momma's packed with all sorts of baby product love so I thought I'd share some of the faves in our household as well.  We have been very fortunate in that Addie really liked the first bottles we tried, first pacis we tried, etc...she's really not a picky baby so take this advice with that piece of info in the back of your mind:)

Baby Bargains Book - For those of you that know me...you know I can be a bit of an impulse buyer so when we found out we were pregnant it took a tremendous amount of self discipline not to just purchase everything under the sun.  I did a lot of research and talked to a lot of mommas...not to mention all of my blog lurking...to find what I hoped would be the best and most sensible for our darling daughter.  I had heard horror stories of momma's being so overwhelmed and just losing it during the registering process because of the 8 gazillion baby products and choices out there.  Which I fully get - I totally walked out of Babies R Us my first time there while shopping for a gift for a friend - I headed over to Target where their 5 aisles of baby stuff was much more manageable and far less overwhelming for me - true story.  SO, I ordered the Baby Bargains book and poured over all of the pros and cons of the basics (car seats, strollers, high chairs, bottles...everything)  This book is very comprehensive and has tons of good info on current baby products and is wonderful in pointing out what you need and don't need and what will give you the best bang for your buck.  I used this book and all of the other info I had stored away in my pea brain and made a list of exactly what brand/model I wanted for all of the big stuff.  This made the registering process much easier for me because upon arriving to the store I was only tasked with the fun part - picking out the colors and patterns!

PhotobucketDr. Browns Bottles - We just LOVED these...Addie still has really bad reflux and these have helped tremendously.  They were recommended to us by the hub's cousin who has twin girls and she swore by these after trying a ton of other types.  We started with these and they work very well - initially we started with the glass but now that Addie is holding these herself we have switched to the plastic so that she can hold and if she drops we don't have a disaster.

PhotobucketRazeberry Teethers - In the past few weeks these have been a lifesaver.  Addie is a paci baby so the design of these works well.  She really does enjoy teething on these and they are super easy to clean and pack along in the baby bag.  This have been by far the best teething solution for us (for some reason, Sophie never really caught on but I have heard wonderful things about her too)

Photobucket
Fisher Price Luv U Zoo EZ Clean High Chair - Fisher Price always seems to make super cheesy baby stuff - and this high chair is NO exception.  But, they got outstanding safety ratings on their high chairs, are reasonably priced, and after comparing to the others they had in the store seemed the most momma-friendly when it came to cleaning up.  So, we chose this high chair and its been the perfect solution for our needs.  Its adjustable so depending on where we are feeding her we can adjust the height to be comfortable for us, the tray is removable (we can pull her up to the table) and you can stick it in the dishwasher, and the seat reclines so we can give her her bottle and recline her back a bit and she's good to go (she's actually fallen asleep in this thing).  It also has straps that go around her waist and over her shoulders so I never doubt that she's going to fall out and the straps are actually a plastic/rubber type material so they wipe down very easily.  The seat cover also comes off and washes well...and dries quickly.

PhotobucketGraco Sweet Peace Safari Swing - Addie LOVED her swing and we loved that not only could she sleep in the swing but that we could pop the swing out and actually snap in her Graco Snugride car seat and it would swing as well.  That feature was perfect when we got home from being out and didn't want to wake Addie.  There were six different speeds on the swinging motion and you could actually plug in your iPod or MP3 player directly and play music through it - or any of the pre-set music options they had.

First Years Paci Wipes - These were an essential in our diaper bag - Addie constantly throws her paci out on the floor and these are great little wipes to have on hand to quickly wipe those off and give back!!  They are a little expensive but one pack lasted us about 6 months.

Please feel free to share any comments about products that have worked well in your house or your experiences (good or bad) with the products above!

Also, here are a few other baby product reviews I done on this little blog: evenflo exersauser, wubba nub pacis, California Baby sunscreen

Product Review - California Baby Sunscreen

Disclaimer - I was NOT paid or incentivized in ANY way to write this review - I just like passing along what does and doesn't work for us!

Seeing as though this weekend marks the unofficial start to summer - I thought I'd start off with a product review of some baby sunscreen, thats also great for us grown-ups (especially if you have sensitive skin) to use as well.

Price: $18.59 at Target online (see link above - this price is comparable to what I paid to buy it in the store)

Gender: neutral

Easy to use: Yes - I really really liked the consistency of this lotion - It was thick enough that it didn't make a mess but was absorbed by the skin very quickly with no greasy residue (a huge plus in my book).  It left the skin feeling VERY soft and there was no trademark "white" left behind.  Putting it on Addie's face was a bit difficult but they also make a sunscreen stick (which I have not tried) that would probably be easier for facial application on your wee one.

Success or Failure: success - we love it!

Age she started using it: 6 months - we had no need for it earlier as Addie was an October baby so it really wasn't hard to keep her out of the sun for the first 6 months (which is what is recommended by the docs) but check with your pediatrician, as always, as to when its ok to use this

Age she stopped using it: hhhmm...I'm going to go with 16 - when she decides shes too cool to go to the beach with me or wear sunscreen so she can get the maximum sun exposure (if shes anything like me!)

Pros:  As I mentioned above, this stuff goes on VERY well for a sunscreen and after about 2 hours in the sun, there was NO evidence that we had been out there so I feel pretty confident that the sunscreen  is doing its job.  California Baby is know for their wholistic all-natural products that are great for babies and adults with sensitive skin and this product is no exception.  I did purchase the water resistant variety as we will be spending a good portion of our summer pool side and at the beach so that was a "must" for us.  This product does not contain alot of the harmful chemicals that are found in alot of other sunscreens, even those made specifically for babies.  There is alot of great information out there concerning sunscreens and depending on your needs and skin type - what might just work best for you.

Cons:  Simply put - this stuff is not cheap.  As the lady at Target scanned it through she must have caught a glimpse of the price because she stopped - looked at the bottle in her hand - looked back at the register screen - looked at me - to which I nodded my head and said "yeah, that really is the price."  She shook her head and placed it in the bag.

Other info:  This post is only meant to be a product review so I won't give the "and..always wear sunscreen (anyone remember the baz luhrman song? ha!)" speal.  But, my friend Cheryl over at Nap Time is the New Happy Hour, posted a very moving and informative series of posts here and here about the benefits of protecting yourself and your baby from the sun as well as some wonderful ideas and products - you really should check it out - it was a great reminder of just how important this stuff is!!!

Would I buy again or buy for a friend? Yes - I'm one of those people that tends to get somewhat set in my ways and when I find something I like and that works I'm very hesitant to change.  So, this will become a staple in the beach/pool bag!

My momma suit and other summer related items

YAY!!  This weekend is Memorial Day weekend - the unofficial start to summer - and I'm ALMOST ready!!  I just LOVE this time of year - and after joining the pool this weekend, I had some items that still needed to be bought to prepare for the start of summer!  My first find was the momma suit that I scored from TJ Maxx.

And, thanks to TJ Maxx, I saved $87 - yes, I only paid $29.99 for this regularly priced $117 suit.  It's very comfortable to try on and I feel secure - like I don't think anything will pop out or over and I think even Addie's hands won't be able to pull anything down (only time will tell).  I actually got this suit in a sea green color (similar to the font color in the picture) thats vibrant and different from my standard black.

My next purchase was made online at J Crew (currently they are offering an additional 30% off their SALE items - and they do have a lot of mom suits in this category - and free shipping on $100+ orders) where I don't do a whole ton of shopping but their beach/pool stuff is very classy and pretty reasonably priced.  From there, I scored a pair of flip flops, 2 new fun tanks, a straw hat, and a beach bag.  At this point, you're likely wondering if I've ever been to a pool or the beach - I mean, who doesn't already have these things?!  Well, in the past - I was an early morning kind of beach/pool patron - get there with my ipod and a towel to get my tan and get out.  I didn't linger and take the salt air in - I was there for the SUN and the sun only...I'm changing my ways and really hoping to make much more of a social event out of going to the pool and the beach.  So...I figured I'd at least look the part to start with.

I had also picked up a cover-up from the LOFT when they had their bug 40% sale a few weeks back so I don't have to scare any innocent bystanders in the parking lot.

However, I am missing one....what I currently consider VERY IMPORTANT item...I don't have a towel for Addie!  I've found a few that are cute but I'm at a loss and was hoping I might be able to get some help or ideas from ya'll on my little...what I'll call...situation.  Most of the beach towels I'm finding are for toddlers and above and would be HUGE on Addie..fortunately I did find a couple of towels that could work but I'm undecided.  The first is from the letter tree and its a hooded towel in various animal ensembles.  I think the dolphin and turtle are super cute but I've never ordered from this company before, nor do I know anyone that has so I'm curious about the quality of their products.  Anybody out there ever used them?

The second is just the miniature beach towel from Pottery Barn Kids that doesn't have a hood but the need for a hood is part of my current internal debate.  I love Pottery Barn's stuff so I have no concerns about the quality - I just don't know if I need that darned hood or not.  So, I'm hoping ya'll might have some insight into what you've used that worked best, already bought, or great ideas you've heard of when it comes to the baby towels.  I know this seems SO trivial to be concerning myself with this but I'd like to get the towel right the first time...so I'm hoping with some advice and I can get there.

So, there you have it...everything beach/pool related thats going on in this little household in anticipation of the upcoming weekend - and....even better, I'm planning to be on vacation that week following...which makes this weekend extra exciting!

Earth's Best Baby Food Deal

PhotobucketI try really hard to make most of Addie's baby food but let's be honest here, life gets busy and I don't always have homemade food on hand.  SO, because I can generally be pretty honest with myself, I do keep some store bought baby food on hand.  I'm a total nerd about the organic stuff and have found that with baby food, if you watch the sales, you can generally get it at the same price or less than non-organic baby foods.  So, as I was perusing the grocery store aisles this weekend, I found what I consider to be a pretty good deal on the Earths Best organic baby food jars.  At my local Harris Teeter, they are "buy one, get one" and with a $1.00 coupon that I printed from their website, it brings the total cost per jar to $0.15 for the Stage 1, $0.36 for the Stage 2, and $0.45 for the Stage 3.  Their website will allow you to print the coupon three times SO, by using the bogo deal and coupon together, you will only spend $3.20 for 21 Stage 1 jars, $7.50 for 21 Stage 2 jars, or $9.50 for 21 Stage 3 jars.  A pretty good deal and no "real" extreme couponing involved.  I promise you - I hardly have time to clip anything and this literally took me no time to print the coupons and use my VIC (very important customer - which is free) card to get this deal.
Photobucket
Also, as a side note, I love the Earth's Best jars because I can reuse them to store my homemade baby food in as well - they go from freezer, to fridge, to bottle/food warmer all in quick order.  I'd love to hear about any other great baby finds you've recently found or other coupons to sweeten this deal - the "bogo" deal at Harris Teeter is only good through Tuesday so hit the store if you want to take full advantage of this deal!!!  Happy shopping!

Our own version of the NFL lock-out??

Beware - RANT ahead.
Photobucket
I just love this girl to pieces:)
During our last visit to Addie's pediatrician we were greeted with -"here's a letter you need to read about potential changes to your health insurance."  Hhhmmmm....ok, I thought - this ought to be interesting.  I read the letter which basically stated that Anthem, whom our health insurance is through, was at odds with CHKD (the primary network of pediatricians in our area) and negotiations to renew the contract between the two parties had stalled.  The primary reason...they couldn't agree on pay rates.  HA!  Seriously...millionaires can't get along with billionaires....boy, this surely sounds familiar.  I have spent the last several months listening to all of the hoop-la about the failed NFL negotiations and I too am a disappointed NFL fan but THIS....seriously, this was different.  Here's my deal...the NFL deal (or lack thereof) is bad - no football - BOO:(  But, asking me to switch pediatricians simply because the the two parties can't get along is a whole different story - now you are involving my family...and I just can't get down with that.  I am all for fair pay rates and people should be compensated for the services they provide but my daughter shouldn't have to suffer because these two can't find middle ground. Because...unfortunately, at the end of the day the only ones that suffer from all of this are the kids...and that's just not fair.  So...at the bottom of letter it listed a phone number I could call - which of course directs you to an automated message about the negotiations - blah, blah, blah.  Not anything I didn't already know - next step - call CHKD and this time....a live voice!!  A nice, friendly, understanding and sympathetic voice that listened to my concerns and said as much as she could.  Her message was not significantly different from that of any other correspondence I had received but she seemed genuinely concerned about my situation and assured me that should negotiations completely fail and Anthem and CHKD part ways, they would do everything they could to transition their current patients to their new pediatricians that are considered in-network.  She passed along a web address (www.chkd.org/anthem) that would provide updates as they were available and also encouraged me to call back should I have any additional questions.  Ok - I appreciated that but at the end of the day the bottom line is this - if they can't reach an agreement we will be forced to either pay "out of network" costs (only 70% of our visits will be covered - leaving us to pay approximately $200 per visit - ouch) or to change pediatricians to an "in-network" physician where we will pay $0 for Addie's well-baby care visits.  Frustrating on several different fronts - the first being that we pay ALOT of money a month for health insurance and to add on to that because someone thinks they aren't getting a large enough cut is disheartening and also we went through a fairly laborious process of talking to friends and meeting with pediatricians prior to Addie's arrival to find a pediatrician that we thought would provide Addie with the best care.  We LOVE Addie's pediatrician - we are comfortable with him - we trust him - and we DONT want to change.  And honestly, we likely won't - we'll suck it up and pay the 30% and it will pain me everytime I hand over my check card because this should be FREE!!! Whew...ok, I must admit - I feel slightly better having that off my chest.  Anyone else had this happen??  If so, were they able to resolve it before you had to make a change or pay out of pocket??
