Hate paying your cable bill every month when your local provider is offering up much cheaper deals to new customers?? Yep....a big pet peeve of mine too. In my head the conversation usually goes like this.
"Why am I...a loyal customer...paying 50% more than these new customers that these companies have to spend money to install for "free" their cable when mine is already in? Can't they offer me the same deal..or even better?"
So...what's a girl to do about this...well, I hop on my phone and call 'em up to let them know that they can either give me a better deal or I'm headed over to the other cable company to get my deal. The conversation is never easy...and I dread these calls. The first person never has enough authority to get me the deal that I consider fair so I usually have to talk to several people (and yes that sometimes includes the "termination department") to get a fair price. But...it's worth it because it means less money out of my pocket every month.
So, seriously ya'll...its the new year and why not take a look at all of that money leaving your account every month for these kinds of things and figure out if you can get a better deal...just call, you'd be surprised at what one call can do.

We got so fed up with the cable company.....we turned it off! gasp!
We hooked up an antenna. And surprisingly if it's not windy or too cloudy, too rainy or other than perfect weather.... we get great HD reception on the network channels. (LOLOLOLOL)
This was a HARD transition for us at first. REAL hard for the hubby. But with Presley and working full time we don't have much time for TV anyway. We get netflix and my dad got us Google TV (*smart TV) The bill for netflix is under $20 a month so we are saving anywhere from $80 to $100 a month not having cable with HD and DVR. (why have it otherwise!?!?!)
I do look forward to the day when we have time to watch the DVR again and the bill of cable is worth the price tag. But for now...our days are full of work and then time with our little girl. We go for more walks, listen to more music and the TV is off way more often than it would have been otherwise. I don't see this changing for us till our kids are closer teens- maybe older. I think our days will only get crazier and do we really need the additional influence on the kiddos? They will have the internet, movies and some tv. I think I'm OK with not having a ton of it in the house for them at easy access.
But the original goal was to cut expenses out of the budget and it changed more than that in our house.
I so couldn't agree with you anymore on this subject! I always make my husband make those calls...which currently we need to b/c our "12 mo" deal just ended on our cable/internet.
tons of people i know have done this and i am jumping on the bandwagon!
I just had the BEST conversation while setting up our Internet after we moved..two compaines charge $31 a month of you pay the entire year in advance or there is $50 a month. FOR INTERNET! When is the US going to provide wireless to everyone for free? Get with it country!
Anyway, I call third company wanting cable Internet. We don't do cable through them, we have DISH Network. I just want the Internet. I find a deal online for $29 a month. Sounds good. I call to get installation set up, they don't see my record, so I am put on hold. "We don't see the deal you were talking about, but I can get you set up for $19 a month. Would you like to set up installation right now?" Umm.. did he really just give a deal $10 cheaper? This NEVER happens nor will happen ever again. Score one for me!
OMG we have this talk EVERY month. To the point where I just want to cancel the cable completely. (And get roku or whatever that thing is called). Thanks for making me think of this - maybe we will try to shop around for a better deal!!!
Happy Monday chica!!! Sending lots of positive vibes your way! xoxo
i'm so doing this today! we paid $200 a month for cable (ridic) and so I shut off the movie channels on the hubs. With a new baby who has time to watch movies? However, if we were new customers we'd pay far less. I need to get on this. :)
I seriously need to do this. I couldnt agree more. I got a paper in the mail the other day saying new customers could get cable and internet with a dvr for 65$ per month for a year!!! Thats less than half of what I pay! Ugh. I was thinking the same thing you put in this blog. I'm calling tomorrow, hopefully I get the results you do. :)
We have done this on many occassions and usually get a lower rate but a few times we have left companies. It is a huge pet peeve of mine as well.
Yup, you did the exact right thing! Keep some money in the pockets:)
We did that and even got a FREE reinstall of the new/better equipment! Another bill that gets people is trash. We got it for $40 less by switching!
During these trying times, everybody does need to cut corners. If we can get a better deal on something, we should definitely grab it.
